Hi everyone.

I have an old stereo tuner (JVC FX-311) which is not working. I took it apart and found two caps on the power supply that are blown so I ordered the replacements.

Looking at the main board - ENA-079 - I noticed another part which appears to have leaked the same as a capacitor, but it is not packaged the same (I'm not familiar with every type of cap, though).

This is the part I'm trying to identify and replace as I 'assume' that it is dead (because of the apparent leakage).Printed on the side of the part is 7.200 on it's own line and NDK95N on the 2nd line.

When I look in the manual, the part is identified as a resonator. I was going to upload the manual, but it's 14MB, which is too large for the upload feature here. So, instead, the manual is located at this address:
http://freeservicemanuals.info/en/servicemanuals/viewmanual/JVC/FX311BK/FX311LBK/
  • Page 35 is the board layout.
  • Page 38 lists the part as item XT102 at the end of the OTHER section.
Below are some pics I took of the part.

Thank you for your time and any assistance you can provide correctly identifying the part.

The metal shiny can contains a crystal for defining a frequency - 7.2MHz.
There will not be any gunge in the can, it is probably filled with dry air. Expensive ones are filled with nothing - i.e. a vacuum.

Thank you for the information duke37.

I 1st assumed it was a crystal - because the manual listed it as a resonator - and there's nothing in the part (liquid), but I was confused by the spill at the board around the part. Thus, I assumed I was incorrect by 1st determining it was a crystal.

Therefore, I can reasonably deduce, since there's nothing inside the part (liquid), the brown-coloured spill on the board would have probably been a manufacturing spill (such as lacquer), and the part is probably functioning correctly.

Would you agree?

Cheers.

they often put a bit of glue around crystals and other components in oscillators
it improves the stability of the oscillator

If you have a general coverage receiver, then you shoud hear it on 7.2MHz
