Hey all;

This is actually a design question so please bear with me:
I've been recording some classical guitar (using Shure BG4.1 mic => homebrew
SSM2017 micpre => Echo Mia soundcard at 24 bit => computer) and get pretty
decent sound but have noticed the highs are a little brittle. Not hideously
distorted or anything, but definitely unnatural sounding.

My electronics question is this: To get a high enough input to the
soundcard, I have to set the mic pre pretty high (probably 80 - 95% of the
maximum 60dB gain). The 2017 is designed to be a complete pro quality mic
pre with a maximum of 60dB of gain. Even so, is it possible that this is
what is trashing my highs? I ask because I'm thinking about adding a 2nd
stage of gain if this might help the problem.

Of course, it's quite possible that the mic may be at fault, but without
bringing in a few different mics, it's hard to tell. The soundcard is fairly
high end (designed for recording not gaming) so I doubt it is at fault.

What do you guys think? Is is worth trying a 2nd stage, or should I go the
mic substitution route?

Thanks
