Horizontal bar on Sears TV

I've just been to my mother-in-law's apartment to look at her TV.

It's a Sears-Roebuck model564-42110900, built 9/79.

I know it's old by most people's standards, but it's fine for her, or
for me, for that matter. I need some advice from some of the older TV
techs here. Here's the problem:

It's got a white horizontal bar across the screen. The bar is narrow,
only about 5-6 sweep lines, and it always stays in exactly the same
place, about 3/4 of the way down the screen. The picture is still
visible thru the bar, but it's distorted (bent?) above and below about
an inch each way.

Since this happened the vertical sync is not too good and the vert
sync bar usually rolls downward, sometimes seeming to "catch" at the
white bar.

I haven't been inside the set yet, but I'm perfectly willing to look
to see what I can do. Don't worry, I'm familiar with, and know what to
be cautious of, inside the set.

I'd just like to get some more experienced advice before I try.

I'm hoping this could just be a simple dried out capacitor somewhere.
Is this likely?

thanks,

Capacitor problem, possibly and likely, simply ESR the ones in the vertical
circuit.
For more specific responses post the chassis number and OEM manufacture as
SEARS used many OEMs.

If it is the old Sanyo chassis with the JU.... ceramic vertical output
module, you may not be able to find a replacement. Check Ohio's Nesda page
for information on the specifics for that one.

Honestly, how big is the tv set and how much use has it seen. While it
certainly is possible the picture tube is still good, there is also a good
chance if it has been used a lot the tube is getting a bit long in the tooth
and will not produce a good crisp image. Plus there is the added problems
with capacitor aging all over the set in one that old. In other words, do
not try and spend a lot of time or money on it, get in, ESR the vertical
capacitors, give a shot at fixing it, pull out if there are multiple issues.

This is all I found on the back of the set. If I open it up am I
likely to find more info inside? I really have no idea how I would go
about recognizing the OEM. (But I'd appreciate an explanation.)
