Horizontal Tearing on Sony Beta VCR

This seems like a pretty straightforward problem, and maybe it is, but
it's one I haven't encountered before. Near the middle of the picture,
there's a narrow horizontal area that tears to one side. The rest of the
picture is rock solid. I've ruled out any issues with the tape transport,
and have subbed the head preamp and servo boards with no change. What else
could it be?
This is a Sony SL-20 BTW.

If you adjust the tracking control , what effect does it have?
And change, if any , playing tapes recorded on other machines ?

The tracking control has no effect on this anomaly (though it still affects
the tracking). I tried several different, known-good tapes and all give the
same result.

** Had a look at the video signal on a scope ??

Bound to be an anomaly in the horizontal synch.

** Checked and changed all the dud electros yet ?

This is a Sony SL-20 BTW.

** Real museum piece.....

You're not going to want to hear this, but I think your (tape reading) head is bad.
It's usually cheaper to get an entire replacement Beta machine off ebay, that's where I
get mine.
As a last resort before you give up, check your tracking circuit inside the machine. The external
tracking control is only a small area of the tracking 'span' of the circuit. Find the tracking pot
on the board for tracking control, and adjust that. See if it brings your external tracking control
into range.
(PS, you've already CLEANED the heads, and rollers,...right?)
Good luck
