How to preserve 18650 batteries

There are several Lithium type batteries. The ones used in laptops are under stress both at full charge and when they're empty. Reducing the maximum charge you give them as well as the depth of discharge will extend their life.

There is a particular charge level you should leave them at if you're storing them. It seems to be about 40%.
