The sleep mode symptom is a common way a system board can fail. You might be
in for a system board, but then again you might be lucky.
Try running the TP without the hard drive and CD drive. (even with the hard
drive removed the TP should boot to the main IBM logo). Try running it only
on battery, then remove the battery and only on charger (make sure you have
the correct charger). Try removing all power and the bios battery for a few
minutes. Another possibility is that the sleep mode switch (near the pivot
at the rear right of the keyboard bezel) is not jammed down (if that's the
case, you should be able to see a faint image on the display).
