Hi all,

I have been using a few Velleman K2636 units to control AC fans (240V, 4A) with decent short term success, however the circuit only "cuts" the waveform once every full cycle, not every half cycle. This has led to the fans overheating due to noise (I've been told).

The schematic for the circuit can be found on page 11 of the manual (https://www.velleman.eu/downloads/0/illustrated/illustrated_assembly_manual_k2636.pdf). Does anyone know of a way to modify this circuit to enable it to cut both the +ve and -ve side of the wave and hopefully reduce the noise? Or an alternative off the shelf product that I could swap out?

The link shown is intended for Universal (AC/DC brushed) motors.
A simple triac controller will usually work with small AC fans that are shaded pole/split phase type.

A simple light dimmer will cut "both halves".
You should use 1000W or more.

Many fan makers have done away with thyristor control years ago mainly because of the noise component. All simply use a 3 position switch these days. First position connects directly to the supply and the remaining positions switch one of two capacitors in series for lower speed. Values are about 1.8 and 2.5uf 400v. Ones we use are a combo unit i.e. 2 in one casing.
