Internal Alarm going off...

Hi, the wife has just rung me to tell me that she was sitting in the lounge
when all of a sudden the alarm went off. The external bell did not ring,
and apparently the alarm sounded different. She went to the alarm panel to
punch in the code and it was flasing a tamper indicator. Has anyone any
idea what could have caused this? A power surge or something? She
struggled for a while to get it turned off. I'm not sure what exactly it is
she did to finally get it off. She assures me that she had not set it prior
to going out.

The model is a Compact SL 8 if that helps. The zone that it was flashing
was the lounge where my wife was sat at the time.

Not familiar with the model but if you received a tamper within the
protected area, sounds like it is probalby a wireless system. If so, the
covers on the wireless sensors (transmitters) are tampered and will send
that type of signal. Check to see if one of the sensors in that room has a
loose, broken or missing cover. If all seems secure, the sensor itself may
have a problem. Consult your service company for replacement.

As this person is in the UK I may be able to help.Firstly it could be wired.
All systems should have a tamper on all detection devices which will only
cause internal sound in the day mode. As Bob advised, check the cover is on
properly. Also check all the connections are tight in the detector and
panel.
The next thing is a question. Have you had any work done in the property
recently. This can include anything including new carpets. The reason for
this is it could be a damaged cable.

Hi, we haven't had any work done in the building recently. We have only
lived in the house for 4 months now so we are still relatively unfamiliar
with how the burglar alarm is connector.

The system is wired I believe. The alarm panel is by the front door, and
the control box is in the garage itself. From what my wife explained it
sounds like the sounds came from all around the house. I am assuming that
the detectors have speakers in them to generate this sound. The tamper
indicator may be a red-herring in that my wife may have set that herself by
trying to turn the alarm off when it wasn't set already.

All the detectors are nicely in the corner of the rooms, so not much wire is
exposed. They look fine. Could it be the control box in the garage? Could
the recent electrical storms have caused a power surge of some kind to
trigger this event. Whenever we have a power cut our alarm does not go off
so I would assume not...

Lets continue with the tamper idea at this point as you previously said
internal sound only. There are tampers on everything. (Panel, Keypad, Bells,
and Detectors.) Also might be worth considering the age of the system. If it
is older than 4 years it might be a battery fault.

The other common fault after a heavy storm is the outside siren / bell. It
also has a tamper and it may have become faulty due to moisture.
It is possible a Storm could have put a surge in the panel but it is
unlikely as this would normally corrupt the NVM which is the memory which
stores your code. Therefore you wouldn't have been able to turn it off.

I don't think you will have sounders in the detectors, but you will have an
internal sounder (possibly on the Landing) and the panel / keypads will also
have sounders in them.
