Is electronic rust-protection just a scam?

They've recently starting selling these things a a major Canadian
retailer. I think it's just a scam to get you to pay up front for
manually scraping off the rust during obligatory annual inspections.
But if I'm wrong, it follows that a charged air-dielectric capacitor
with steel plates will rust less if if you leave it exposed to the
weather :) Anyway, cars are already rust-protected if a static-charge
is all you need - I routinely get zapped as I step out of the vehicle.

That's the basis of most US trade IME.

is just one example. However the UK seems little better in some respects:

"However, this is not the only range Dr. Sebagh has released. He previously
created the line Meaningful Beauty when the model who made the mole
fashionable, Cindy Crawford encouraged him to bottle his secret ingredients.
This range consists of a skin softening cleanser, moisturiser, eye cream,
and others. Dr. Sebagh's revolutionary formulas fight free radicals, help
support the stimulation of collagen and rejuvenate youthful-looking skin.
They have been Cindy Crawford's secret to flawless skin for ten years!

At the heart of Meaningful Beauty's treatment products is an advanced
antioxidant complex containing a patented extract from a rare French melon.
This revolutionary extract is designed to help boost skin's resilience and
reduce the visible signs of aging. Within four weeks of use, Meaningful
Beauty's formulas help smooth the appearance of visible fine lines, brighten
the complexion, and diminish skin roughness and redness".

Yep. love those magic melons!

So, Homer, You're in need of a "Complete Age Maintenance System" ?:)

Whats sad is not that people do this but that people believe it. This crap
wouldn't work if people wern't so stupid. (stupidity and greed are universal
properties among humans)

So many questions come to mind - like why anyone would think that even if it
worked for melons (dubious) it would work for humans, and that rubbing it on
your skin would work better than eating the melon.

No one ever wants to try the obvious - use it on one side of your face only
and look for a difference. ISTR someone saying that the whole cosmetics
industry is based on wish fulfillment - except there's no fulfillment.

If they did this then they might realize it was total crap. Unfortunately(or
maybe fortunately) they want to trick themselfs in believing there is a
magic pill(or melon ofcourse ;) to take that will make all there "problems"
go away. Why? Cause deep down they know its either impossible or it will
take a lot of hard work to do what needs to be done to get the results. It
always amazes how fat people think that taking pills or eating junk food all
day will make them loose weight. Sure, you can take the pill and maybe it
will make you thin if it doesn't kill you. Maybe doing a little exercise or
a little less eating would be safer?

Its a sad fact but people are not rational or intelligent(and even
intelligent people are stupid). Its the human predicament. But hey, thats
life. I don't think there will be anyone worried to much about there magic
melons, specially cindy, when there on there death bed. I'd wager my life
that cindy's last words won't contain the word melon in it.

The basic principle that is possibly being misapplied here is that of
cathodic protection and galvanic corrosion. Google for it.

This is generally a low-voltage effect, but it does have automotive
implications on optimum system battery polarity where physical
hardware is used as an electrical return, even in automobiles. If
there's sufficient impedance involved that a static charge can biuld
up, then I see no point, unless you're trying to repell salt water
mist (possible?).
