Is my Rubicon ratcheting modular plug crimper defective?

I have a Rubicon modular plug crimper. I read very good reviews about it which is why I got it, even though it was a bit more than the cheap $6 crimpers. However, I noticed this about the crimper:

1. If I terminate a modular plug and release it as soon as the ratchet is pushed far enough and releases, I get a reliable termination and the cable works fine.

2. If I terminate and push a bit further even after the ratchet is ready to be released (I did this initially because I didn't feel the lock release), I get a crimp that works unreliable at the exposed terminals. The phone will drop calls if the plug is moved inside the rj-11 jack.

Is the device defective?

Sounds like it is defective.
I would replace it.

Thanks. I'll have to pay a small restocking fee, but it is only $2-3. I already ordered a used Paladin Tools terminator instead.
