I'd figure someone would dream up some kind of logic gate thingy by now.

I would say you need at least 4 or 5 times the rated current to start the motor.
So I would say at least 2.5 or 3 amps for the motor plus whatever the controller draws.
One caveat is, I have no idea what language that link was in.

First of all I apologize for the horrible PWM Control.
I try to explain the circuit:
S5:main switch (I chose a DPDT Switch becouse it's cheaper than a SPDT/SPST switch and then I can use the other contacts to connect some LEDs)
S1:4 posn rotary for set the speed of the motor
S4: (same as S5) It is a kind of "manual mode", it's the lowest speed and is used to control the position of the motor shaft in a precise manner
S2: reverses the rotation of the motor

Ideally, if you can attach the resistors directly to the selector sw, that'd be the way to go.
