Oh Dear John,
Do I really have to "unlike" your hand drawn schematic?
Of course not!
10 out of 10 for participating!:)
Just get it right next time!:D
EDIT: What time is it on the other side of the world?

Martin, 3pm and all is well.

It can be done with relays but after you buy 8 relays and speed control circuit, it could become costly.

I'd figure someone would dream up some kind of logic gate thingy by now.

Ps: It was a quiz for me to figure out

Lol.

Oh, by the way Martin, those symbols with parallel lines are not capacitors.

hahaha, It's written in Italian
Can I use directly a 4 posn rotary or I need to use relays to control the resistances? What types of resistors should I use?

First of all I apologize for the horrible PWM Control.
I try to explain the circuit:
S5:main switch (I chose a DPDT Switch becouse it's cheaper than a SPDT/SPST switch and then I can use the other contacts to connect some LEDs)
S1:4 posn rotary for set the speed of the motor
S4: (same as S5) It is a kind of "manual mode", it's the lowest speed and is used to control the position of the motor shaft in a precise manner
S2: reverses the rotation of the motor

Detail of the pwm circuit?
Ideally, if you can attach the resistors directly to the selector sw, that'd be the way to go.
