Hi all, i'm new to electronics and have recently been asked to replace an LED chip in a light, i have soldered the connections and the lamp works but after about 20 seconds there is smoke and the connections break, can anyone give me ant advice?

i've tried using a higher temperature solder but that hasn't seemed to work.

Yes, definitely drawing a lot of current to melt the solder.
What chip and what light are you referring to?
Does it perhaps need heat sinking?

its strange, the LED chip is the same one that the unit uses along with the same control gear, but i still get the smoking off the connections when i put power through it.

some of the reading ive done says to use a thermal paste, would tis make a difference?

If it says to use it, use it. It will make a big difference on heat transfer.
But that would kill the chip not melt solder.
You didn't say what chip or light .
