Forgive me if this inquiry is a bit off subject for this group.

I'm in the process of restoring about 12 old Radio Shack Science Fair
Electronic Project Kits. I've managed to locate the few transistors that
needed to be replaced. But the one thing I'm having trouble locating is
the connecting wire that these kits had.

Sometime in the early 1990's they started using wire that was strained
but tinned together. If you look at this wire you see two or three
strands of maybe 30 gage that is twisted together, tinned and then
covered with a flexible plastic. It's the perfect wire for these kits
because of its flexibility.

The real early kits from the late 1960's and 1970's have conventional
strained wire that's tinned at its ends and these are most often in need
of replacement. Some of the more recent kits are missing some of the
wire pieces they're suppose to have.

So I want to locate a source for this more recent wire. And I could
swear that I've seen it available some where and I can't find it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Do you mean stranded? Yes

It probably is less flexible than convential stranded but definitly much
more duable than stranded wire that has only been tinned at its ends.

in a lot of serial cables that I've worked with, especially the
heavier ones. I think those use 26 gauge stranded, tinned wire.

I beleive 26 guage is what I need. I would need a few hundred feet of
four different colors, white, red, blue and yellow.

It sound like I need to take a closer look at some of the serial cables
I've seen at my local electronic surplus shops. Thanks.

I've seen at my local electronic surplus shops. Thanks.

Well, the ones I worked with were 25 feet long, and had 25 pair. So
there's 625 feet altogether in just one cable. But each of the
conductors is a different color, so you'd have 25 different colors.
Some are solid, I think the first ten are standard resistor color
coded. Then the next ten are white with the stripe that's the same
resistor color code. Then the next ten (stopping at the 5th one of
course) are white with a black stripe and the second stripe the color
code, etc. Makes for easy tracing of the wires.

I got a couple hundred feet of Belden 89503 teflon wire from the
ceilings at work; when we installed it in the '80s it cost a dollar a
foot - a thousand foot roll was $1000.00! I stripped the jacket, foil
shielding and drain wire off some of it and I use the wire for hookup
wire. It's so cool to be able to solder this without worrying about
the insulation melting, or burning a hole in the insulation when
you're soldering around a lot of wires.
