Looking to identify an unknown electronic component...

Hi Everyone,

I have an unknown electronics part, and I'm looking to identify it:

- 5 pin device, something variable about it b/c there's a slotted screw
turn on top
- Markings:
- TOP: N3 4
- SIDE: TRO 215 E572
- Image: http://www40.brinkster.com/electromagnetic/images/part.jpg

If someone has an idea what it could be, then I could set it up as
though it were said device, and check if behaves as expected. I just
don't have any clue where to begin as of yet.

Thanks for any help!

I was able to view it fine...... I've already replied privately. What I
can't help him with is the house number as to "exact" type. This item is
either an Oscillator, I.F. or R.F. coil/transformer.

Look like IF transformers from a transistor radio.

Image comes up fine.

I concur. The color of the slug may tell you something about it. As I
recall, an AM radio oscillator coil (640 uH) is red, IF transformers are
yellow or white... Some IF transformers are for 455 kHz (AM) and some for
10.7 MHz (FM).

You're in luck. SOmeone was asking the very same question in
sci.electronics.repair and there are some answers there.

Needless to say, if you really feel you must post to more than
one newsgroup (and you really should think about it really carefully),
the proper method is to cross-post to both of them at the same time
(ie put them in the newsgroup header, separated by a comma), rather
than what you did, which was post to different newsgroups with the
same question, but posting them separately.

UNLESS the paint was worn off - as I've found some with little paint and the
first damned time tuning, it too chipped off. Had to supply more for
marking. I think in his pic - at least ONE was "red". I can't recall if all
were colored or perhaps, if the color is worn off. IF the latter, could be
lots of fun! :(

IF he knows what he took them out of - the purpose, he could look around in
other similar receivers or transmitters and come up with a likely
substitute.
