Never mind, I went and looked it up. Way cool, I never took a VCR that
far apart before. I wonder how hard it would be to connect to the
read/write head wiring.
Well it's been twelve years since I worked on a vcr, but back then it was
not
difficult to get to the wiring (actually posts). You would unsolder the
post from the pcb on top of the head ass'y, remove the screws and lift the
head
ass'y off the rotary transformer ass'y.
BTW where did you look it up at?

Google took me to the wikipedia. I've got an old 4-head VCR that doesn't
work any more. I think I'll dig it out and take a look. Thanks.

That sounds similar to the diagram that John F drew, but his uses a motor
with a hollow shaft if I'm interpreting his drawing correctly. If I
understand you, you are suggesting the drive motor be offset and use a belt
to spin the outside of the other motor (generator).

Any of those methods should work. I was just suggesting an easy/cheap
way of getting the power to the rotating section.

On the VCRs I've pulled apart, it'd be pretty easy. You can reach the
solder pads from the back of the drum.
