motion detector

Hi All,

I'm looking for an quality outdoor motion detector that is really sensitive.
There are no issues with pets or blowing leaves/debris. The ability to
switch 500 watts or more would be nice.

The area needing coverage is a 180 degree area out to a distance of 50 feet.
It would be nice to use a single detector but I could rewire for two if
they each covered 90 degrees.

Recommendations really appreciated.

Watt do you mean 'switch 500 watts'?
What are you trying to do?

My immediate need to replace a "motion activated security light" I bought at
a home improvement warehouse. I simply want to turn on some quartz
security lights and then have a suitable delay before turn off.

Best bet is to buy a replacement for that purpose. I'm pretty sure Home
Depot sells just the pir part for the 120vac motion lights.

Funny you mention that. The original detector performance was poor so I
replaced the detector with a Lowes PIR. Performance is still poor. Most
of the time my car will trigger it at 20 feet (max sensitivity) but it's by
no means a sure thing. Even though this detector is outdoors, it is never
exposed to direct sunlight.

It seems a pattern lately - new water valves that leak, new mini-blinds
missing parts, new paint cans with failing riveted hinges, new PIR's that
would have a tough time detecting a nuclear explosion from 5 feet.

I'm tired of junk. I just want something that works.....consistantly.

Ever read the novel Atlas Shrugged, by Ayn Rand?
It's all John Galt's fault.

Whose John Galt?

My favorite book from all time! The only one I have read multiple times
since College.

Eric, believe me I feel your pain. Unfortunately your choices are limited,
but not difficult. I would recommend, for you, going to a Grainger, or a
commercial lighting supplier and looking around for something that may
better suite your needs. The only other option is getting involved in
input/output control for your lights through a control panel. Problem is,
few control panels on the market can deal with high voltage relays,
especially on a do it yourself level. I've installed countless of outdoor
motion detectors, and tied them into the control panel we use for just the
application your looking for. Problem is, you'll seldom find an alarm
company capable, or an electrician able to marry the two together.

People dont want to pay the real price of things so they buy at wall-mart
and such place,
then they wonder why the quality of everything is going down the drain..

Have you looked at x10 ?

bwahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahhaha
sorry Eric, just having a little fun at your expense

I have one of these
http://www.x10pro.com/pro/catalog/phs01.page7.html
and find the photcell for dusk/dawn too sensitive but the IR sensing works
okay here. You can also use it to control other lights depending on what
kind of lighting you're using
http://www.x10pro.com/pro/catalog/plw01.plw02.page8.html
I wasn't kidding up there with my raucaus laughter. If your lucky, your
other lighting will be on the same phase and your lines won't be too noisey
otherwise you'll curse the day I was born.
