If not, you might be eligible for the NBN interim satellite service

I do have ADSL, which has software control (by telstra)slowing down
things so to allow for the state of the street cabling, or the distance
(Bad line ???)
When first connected it was fast but telstra wont remove the throttling
it has since put on the line (which they did after repairing an
unconnected street fault after lightening.)

Such is the problem with the whole NBN fiasco. Areas that are already
well serviced will get so much choice that no one will want it, yet
areas like yours and mine that are in desperate need get Jack Fucking Shit.

**Shame. That prize luddite, Tony Abbott, has locked this country into a
second-rate broadband. Fool. Even dumber are the fools who supported his
'fraudband' idea. I was due to recieve NBN in 3 years. Now, I won't see
it at all. The best I can hope for is 8Mb/s. Wireless is non-existent,
along with 3G and 4G in my location. In fact, we tried a 4G dongle in
the lappy. It's slower than my ADSL 2+, running through my ancient
wireless router.

NBN is supposed to be here early next year, trouble is if we get it my
son will never move out, he's saving for a house and is planning to buy
by the middle of next year but with NBN here I will have to throw him
out if he can't find a house with NBN

thing.

It's a bugger in your situation, as they can say you have access to
broadband - whereas I had no options at all and was a shoe-in for the
satellite service.

more people expect and the less happy they are with what they have.

I have 6Mb/s and it seems plenty fast enough for me at this point in

middle of next year but with NBN here I will have to throw him out if he
can't find a house with NBN

I called NBNCo and was told "at this stage, everything's going according to
plan."

I called Malcolm Turnbull's office and was told "there haven't been any
decisions made, but if there are, we'll post it on our web site."

A few weeks later, despite over 70% of the work having already been done
(trenches widened from the exchange to well past my house, fibre already
laid more than 50% of the way), the NBNCo web site went to "not planned" for
my area.

It's interesting to note that Strathfield, an area where construction
commenced several months later than it did here, managed to get their
services rolled out - could it possibly be because it's a safe Liberal seat?
Nah, of course not, we couldn't possibly accuse our politicians of such
blatant favouratism, could we? :-/

They have been doing it for years. It's called bandwidth throttling and
is done by the ISP.

How is the satellite service compared to ADSL or ADSL2???

It really depends on three things, what you do on the net, how congested
your part of the net gets and your future needs. I have never had ADSL,
I skipped that part and went straight from dialup to HFC Cable when it
was introduced in Nunawading

I have 6Mb/s and it seems plenty fast enough for me at this point in
time.

I have 25 Mbps down and 10 Mbps up. When I had HFC cable in Melbourne I
had 20 Mbps down and 256 Kbps up. The bottleneck for me was my uplink
speed. I couldn't use video when on Skype chats with people as the
uplink video stream would saturate and eventually overload the
connection. You must note that your uplink is your backchannel for
everything else you do on the download side. If your backchannel is
saturated it affects everything you do on the downlink including making
webpages downloads impossibly slow. Voice alone was ok, no saturation.
Now, with NBN, I am paying for the middle tier speed (10 up 25 down).
Another $15 per month and I can bump that up to the top tier (50 up 100
down) but I simply don't need that kind of speed for what I do. In fact,
I would have been happy with my HFC cable connection had the uplink been
even a mere 5 Mbps as it would have coped with my needs.

By the way, another term for Bandwidth Throttling is Bandwidth Shaping.
Optus used to "Shape" my download bandwidth to 256 Kbps if I went over
my 500 Gigabyte allowance - and I did on occasion. It was enough to do
email and basic web browsing but youtube and bandwidth heavy websites
were out.

I just checked the web site and nothing has changed for my area, still
saying available early 2014 but there is a disclaimer saying not to
reply on the web sites information as its subject to a Govt revue.

I already have 24mbs and am quite happy with the speed , being 1k from
the exchange helps
