It rarely goes 'wrong' - most faults occur when the mating surfaces are contaminated in some way. Give all surfaces that meet (both sides of the strip and the two plated mating surfaces) a thorough clean using IPA (iso-propyl-alchohol) and make sure the correct pressure is exerted between the two - this part is important.
If you over pressure the joint you'll damage the LCD.
