Novice here - I have an old LCD screen that I need to get working for a project. How can I determine what wires control power to the unit without frying circuits? I have these LCD screens that have a 6 wire input to control power (2 wires), audio (2 wires), video (2 wires). Is there a non-destructive way to determine what wire is the power wires?

I have the LCD screens but I do not know which of the 6 wires to use, what power requirements the LCD has (I am assuming 12 volt but who knows).

I tried the obvious like opening the unit up to get the wire information. I can't get the unit apart enough to determine where the wires go in order to designate power, audio or video wires.

There must be a relatively SAFE way to find out that information. Where should I start? (and no, there is no manual for these - they are old LCD screen from the 90's and I have been searching for but have not found any tech manuals or specs.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!
Mike

LCD Screens

Excellent idea on photos! Attached are a couple of photos of the unit. They are old aviation lcd displays that I would like to figure out how to make work for a home project. The only connection necessary to make the unit function (power, video & audio) is an RJ11 style 6 pin on the bottom right side of the unit. The other RJ11 connection (on left) is not utilitized. I tried looking for manuals and/or spec sheets on the internet but these were manufactured before the internet was popular and there does not seem to be anything online. Just need some suggestions as to where to start to identify the wires without blowing up the unit.....

Thanks!

It might pay to take a few photos from inside.

They could be anything from an analogue monitor to a PC, but given the date of manufacture, the former is more likely.

If it is an analogue monitor it may be reasonably straightforward to determine the power requirements and where the inputs connect (determining what input you require may not be as straightforward.)

You may have some luck trying aviation forums, perhaps a few of the members might remember them.

They are seat back monitors, as far as I could find out, made by/for Panasonic.

Hope this helps in some way :)

I can't give you an awful lot of advice, but the images are clear enough that someone well versed in TV repair might be able to comment. I note a couple of crystals and other devices which might give a hint as to the signal used.

The section near the connectors probably has the power supply in it. It's almost certain that it produces the regulated supply rails. The big question for you is "what is the input voltage and where do I connect it? The answer may lie in that section (or at least hints to it)

There's a lot of analogue circuitry in there, so it almost certainly has an analogue input. As to whether they're RGB or some modulated signal, I can't answer.
