NPN transistor audio amp

Is there a way to wire a npn transistor using a speaker and a function generator. I'm trying to get my power supply to provide the power and the function generator to provide a 1 khz tone. I'm just doing this to better understand how to use transistors. Any help is appreciated thanks.

The first one tells you how to use an NPN trransistor as a switch. Replace the load (motor) in th eexamples by the speaker et voilá.
