I have an old film projector (1980s) which has a 1000w Xenon lamp in it. The first problem I had was two capacitors went 'bang' after 15 minutes run time. These capacitors were on the control feed (100vac) to the igniter card and connected between the two feed wires and earth (for RFI suppression). According to the service manual after the lamp is struck, the relay that feeds the 100v AC should disconnect and there shouldn't be any power to the cables where the capacitors went 'bang'. So I am trying to understand why the capacitors failed in the first place. I wonder if diode D5 is failing and causing power to be applied to the igniter card when not required, but I have been advised that diodes either work or don't work. In the pics below it was capacitors C1 & C2 on the starter circuit that failed.
