Most people know how long a second is....

1 million seconds = aprox. 11 days

1 billion seconds = aprox. 33 years

1 trillion seconds = aprox. 33,000 years

The human race has been around for aprox. 6 trillion seconds..

The amount of money it is guestimated the government owes is aprox. 12
trillion dollars.

Twice as long as the human race has been around...

hope helps....have fun....sno

Correct Scientific Terminology:
Hypothesis - a guess as to why or how something occurs
Theory - a hypothesis that has been checked by enough experiments
to be generally assumed to be true.
Law - a hypothesis that has been checked by enough experiments
in enough different ways that it is assumed to be truer then a theory.
Note: nothing is proven in science, things are assumed to be true.

Sorry, Your figures are only accurate in the USA. Other countries are not
likely to count or spell like the USanians.

Here is a reference written by a fellow USanian to make your system look
acceptable.

Jose,

You are absolutely correct....I should have either annotated that it was
for the USA....or put in both systems....thank you for calling it to my
attention....(living in Europe as long as I did, should have thought
about it myself, no excuse)

FYI (and cordually): The "OT" tag is a made-up fig leaf with no meaning. An
off-topic post with the "OT" tag is just as off-topic as one without.

I agree....however I think the OT thingy is the polite way to make a
possible off topic post....will continue doing it this way if I have any
to make in the future....

This gets the message through easier.

http://www.funny-potato.com/trillion-dollars.html

I was under the impression that the US debt is more like 14 trillion,
with Communist China holding more and more of the IOUs

mike

I guess my 12 trillion was yesterdays number <grin>

I find it easier to remember 11, 33, 33,000.....and since my mental math
skills stop at three times...whenever I hear million/trillion I just
multiply the number by 33 which gives me a good estimate of how many
seconds....(I hope this makes sense <grin>)

thank you for listening to my thoughts....have fun....sno

You could go find someplace where it is on topic, if you really have to post it.

He followed Usenet protocol and it wasn't spam.
Next some will have sno spinning around and saying Heil Mary's before asking
permission to post.

LOL....thank you jose...will spam all the newsgroups asking permission
from now on before I post any possible off topic stuff....and that will
give everyone more things to bitch about <grin>

have a nice day and have fun......sno

Well, I'm kind of glad there was a post, at least nothing is wrong
with my news reader.

It would be nice if someone could point to the RFC outlining the
protocol use of "OT", I always thought it was a "Fig Leaf" too (good
analogy Vaughn).

As for me, I'm not troubled as long it is not a for profit, it's by
someone who contributes on-topic to the group, and they participate in
the thread they start.

But it does seem only fair that people should have as much right to
their off-topic opinions of an off-topic post, as the off-topic author
has. But that's just me.

Ya gotta' love Usenet and most forums, for that matter.

People spend more time, forum space and bandwidth, themselves,
bitching about the wasted time, forum space, and bandwidth from
others...LOL

May I suggest OE Quotefix. It will solve the quote problem with Outlook express
and google groups postings.
http://home.in.tum.de/~jain/software/oe-quotefix/

But it won't do anything for top posting.

I'll second that. I used it when I was still on OE and found it worked
well.

Since moving to W7, and it doesn't come with OE or Windows Mail, I went
out and got Thunderbird, which works well for me (it understands
'threads' and all, like a news-reader should).

Yes the US culture has tainted, even Canukistan, with their counting
system and illiterate bad spelling habits and serious counting
limitations. Most of Europe hasn't bit for the lazy side of things,
but then the UK isn't part of Europe, either. They are going to
destroy your "pint", next. I can see it coming so keep your
refrigerator locked or the beer will end up taking all the room.

You say that like it is a bad thing?

A "billion" is not used for most scientific purposes.

The US defines it as a thousand million.
The UK defines it as a million million.
It use is restricted to financial activities and even then it's often
expanded to make the meaning clear.

Using the term is an invitation to misuse and confusion.

I agree....should have made a note that it applied to US only....
no excuse...
