PCB and potentiometer question

I have a question regarding the placement of the potentiometer pictured below. There are three solder points for each placement (RV1 and RV2), however I see an extra one in the middle. Is this one supposed to be a stand alone solder point or am I missing something?

Also I am not sure if it is even a potentiometer. If it is, am I supposed to connect something external to it so I can physically control the current?

I'm pretty sure you'll find those two "middle" connections are connected together. It allows you to use a vertical mount trimpot, or a horizontal mount trimpot (like the one you have) to be fitted here.

You need to solder all three leads.

I soldered all three. I just didn't solder the middle copper points in between the three.

But what is the purpose of the two copper points in the middle of the pots?

They are used, as steve has already pointed out, for placement of horizontal trimpots.
The makers of the kit allow for a variety of pots.
