Phillips 27PS55 Problem

OK, I know this board is for far more experienced techies than myself,
so if I should go somewhere else, please point me to the right
place...

I have a Phillips 27PS55 TV which was purchased a year and a half ago.
Currently, when the TV is powered on, the picture is all distorted and
flashes all different hues, then the screen flashes a redish color
then the screen turns off (but not the TV), and the high pitch noise
TVs make stops. I have to then turn the power off.

The person who first experienced this problem said the first time it
happened, he either saw or smells smoke.

I took the back off of the TV and could not see anything visibly
burnted. After I put it back together, I powered the TV on and it
worked for about 20 minutes, then did it again.

I have some knowledge of repair, soldering, etc.. but not much as far
as TVs go. I do have soldering gear and a digital multimeter as far as
tools go, and there's a Radio Shack nearby. If anyone is willing to
give me some pointers as to what this particular problem could be,
that would be great. I am looking to fix this myself.. the TV was $200
new so I don't know that sending it out to get repaired is worth the
money. It's gotta be out of warranty by now.

I found the Sci.Electronics.Repair FAQ but wasn't sure what to look
for.

Hi,
Though I am not expert in TV repairing but I do a little bit. If I will have
to repair this TV then I'll start as following:

1. Because smoke was there so, carefully examine the power supply section
and EHT section for any burned component like resister or coil/transformer,
capacitor. Check for the electrolytic capacitors in these sections.

2. Get the circuit diagram. Check if this behavior of TV is consistent.

3. If nothing wrong found visibly then check for the power supply voltage
before and after the TV goes in to dead state. It could be possible that
something gets heat up and then problem starts that is why TV work fine for
20 minutes. when something starts going wrong and power supply overloads
and it shuts the supply as a over current protection.

4. Check the voltage at some test points as indicated in circuit diagram.

Hope this helps a bit.

Regards
Suraj
