I was watching the TV (a 12 year old
Sony 27 inch XBR).
The picture briefly scrambled, an unusual noise
was emitted and the picture and audio ceased.

I unplugged the TV for 5 minutes and plugged it
back in. Switched on the TV.
Now, the audio appears as normal, but no picture.
It stays black, not even the on screen program graphics
work.
I took a look down the back (have not removed the
cover yet). The tube filaments look to be lit.

What happened here? Is it a fault in the HT
subsystem?

Just fixed a 27XR, it was dead with a electrical hum. It turned out to be a
burnt solder joint in the SMPS transformer. (After repairing this it went
from picture to black screen, on and off, although green channel numbers
(OSD) was showing when screen was black. This turned out to be bad solder
joint in L107.)
In your case, you should probably check pin11 on the SMPS transformer
located on board G. (This is based on schematics of a similar TV, hope it
correspond with yours). It could be a weakness in this modell...
Good Luck!

Thanks for the tips.
I've got the service manual somewhere...
I'll check out the items you mentioned.

I had a professional reply done on the power supply
(board G ?) about 4 months ago.
