PIR Sensor for stair case

Hello everyone this is my first post

I want to fit a PIR sensor to the 5x 12v 10w lights that run up the stairs in my house, the idea is to have them come on when someone is on the stair.

The PIR fitted now is a problem as it's fitted to the wall down near the stairs and is facing the over wall 1m away.

Is this too close ? The switch triggers on it's own without anyone moving on the stairs or nearby ..........

If a PIR sensor sees a quickly changing sunlight pattern (or a heater turning on & off) for example it may wery well respond to this.
It won't do any good to have it facing into a wall just 1m away. Try to make a sketch of the stair area and post it here.
