Potentiometer Help!!!

I am using some controller boards to run 2 12v motors. The board that I am
using needs a 5k pot to serve as the input. The pot center is neutral when
turned to the right the motor goes forward and when turned to the left the
motor goes in reverse. I would like to use a 10k pot joystick that I
already have purchased since it is what would work best for the way I have
designed the control system. Is there anyway to make a 10k pot act like a
5k pot or is there a way to maniuplate the signal??? Help!!!

it depends.
the controller board is now using all 3 wires on the 5k pot its a got
chance that 10k will work just fine.

chances are it will be OK just to substitute it. usually a pot is wired
like this:

+ve --------------
|
[]
[]
[]<-----wiper (output)
[]
[]
|
ground -----------

The voltage on the wiper will change just the same whichever value pot you
use. The only problem is if it's wired differently, or if the circuit is
expecting to be able to draw more current than the higher value pot can
cope with. (As current is drawn from the wiper down to ground, it changes
the output voltage slightly).
