I need to design a high power supply e.g. 30-50 VDC @ 25 - 40 A. The supply is not variable, that's just the range e.g. 875VA to 2000VA. There are two approaches, either using a toroidal transformer which is pretty straightforward or switch-mode. Most power supplies today seem to be switching but rarely are they high power. Would it be more practical (and economical) to go toroidal or are there suitable switch-mode designs? Weight or size are not a factor.

how about something like these .....

http://www.alibaba.com/showroom/48v-30a-switching-power-supply.html

at those prices you could never build one anywhere near that price

for a linear supply, the transformer alone is likely to cost $400 give or take a bit
then you have casing, rectifier, capacitors, filter inductors etc

you probably wouldn't get much change out of $800 - 900
