I'll be installing replacement caps for the CRT deflector plates this
weekend and firing it up for testing. The probe connections on this
unit are standard banana type, like for typical multi-meters. Will my
multi-meter probes be good enough, or is there a special type of probe
that is needed? Any suggestions on what to measure (ie household
current) for a quick test? Unit does power up, but had problems
centering the trace...

Regular bananna plug/jacks should be ok as long as you are not
measuring voltages high enough to break donw the connectors, and that
doesn't seem likely.

Don't know what Vin(max) would be for this scope, but I wouldn't
recommend 117V. Try a convenient wall wart, or spare doorbell
transformer. Using coax rather than multimeter probes would be
more accurate for higher frequencies.

With banana jacks standard, I doubt this thing has a bandwidth more than
100 kHz, maybe less.

Once you get tire of looking at 60 Hz AC, try the output of an audio
system (walkman, CD player, etc.). I wouldn't risk an Ipod until you
know it isn't going to zap it though! :)
