Pronunciation of NiMH ?

I guess it doesn't get any more basic than this : How do you pronounce
the abbreviation NiMH ? The pronunciation of NiCd as "nye-kad" seems to
be almost universal. Is there an equivalent pronunciation of NiMH ?

Did you ever read "Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH" as a kid? Or see
the movie "Secret of NIMH"? I always pronounce is "nim" as in "tim."

Some might say it "nyme" because of how "ni" is pronounced in NiCd.

Nope. Just say "nickel-metal-hydride."

Thanks, Bob. Living in a remote region and being regarded as something
of a local expert on electronics, I was rather embarrassed by my
ignorance of the proper pronunciation. I'm relieved to learn that there
is no such correct pronunciation for the abbreviation, and that my
habit of saying the full name was correct.

I've searched several times and seen people state their preferences and
make proposals for a standard pronunciation. I was wondering if a
particular way of saying it had established itself as standard.

"When in doubt, read it out" I guess. I've never had anyone not know
what I was talking about when I said "nim" but I guess
"nickel-metal-hydride" leaves no ambiguity.

How about Lithium-Ion (Li-Ion) and Lithium-Polymer (LiPo) batteries? I
say "lion" and "lipo" respectively.

True. And thanks for the clarification. What I meant was that IF a
certain way of pronouncing the abbreviated form had become standard, it
would sound rather stupid to keep saying the full name in normal
conversation. Rather like using the full form of laser, scuba or radar
all the time.... :)

So I suppose if your Dustbuster uses LiPo batteries, it's
an example of liposuction? :)

Somebody that's closer than me hit him, please... Not hard enough to
injure, just hard enough to cause enough pain to realize he's done an
evil thing and he knows not to do it again :)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0084649/ ;-)

I'm pretty sure it rhymes with NIMH. The 'i' is short, and the 'h' is
pretty much silent, like just 'nim'.

At least that's the way I prnounce it. :)

Cheers!
