Quadrature Optical Encoders

Is anyone aware of an optical encoder other than the HP/Agilent HEDS series?
I want the encoder and disk as separate units rather than as a complete
assembly. I'm looking at around 1000 / rev resolution. Searching the likely
culprits has not turned up anything.

TIA

This any use?:

It's for Australian made digital setting circles (astronomy).

Hi Vermin - this is getting closer - I might give them a call and see what
price they are looking at. Appearances may not count but the unit looks a
little cheaper than others I've seen (ranging from $300 rapidly upward). The
compoents for the Agilent / HP units are around $120 for the disk & encoder.

Thanks

They are $134 Oz - listed on the website - not too bad!

Hi David - Thanks for the reply. I am really looking for the innards of the
assemblies, just the encoder disks and the opto component rather than a
complete unit.

Rob,

I remember that they used to have the encoder disks and optics and all
the other parts, and assemble them to suit the requirements of the
customer locally, as there were too many combinations of counts/rev, shaft
size, polarity etc to stock. I guess now with the smarter encoders which
you program the resolution this may have changed. It may be worth giving
them a ring to see if they will sell them as parts.

Good idea, I will. Thanks

Try getting the disc's etched at your local PCB house. I used the get
encoder discs done this way. I used brass shim.

That would work well, but I am chasing up to 2000 / rev which might be a bit
fine (??) for chemical milling.
I found a company the other week (called Alpha Better) that prints direct
onto some type of self adhesive film - all multicolour in both film and ink.
Pretty tough - no marking with isopropyl or fingernail scratching.
Supposedly about $100 for couple of feet of 80 column wide film. This method
too would be ok for low res disks, it could be a good source of
professional looking front panel labels though. There is a company over east
that Entech uses to do polyimide solder masks. They are laser etched. Cost
is pretty high, IIRC around $250 each.
