Question: Fluke multimeter fading, features, durability

I've never seen one fade myself.

My old ones are fine too.

I suspect it's not a problem with the Flukes in particular, it's just
that Flukes last a long time so these things show up eventually. It's
not uncommon for people to keep their Flukes for 20 years, and treat
them harshly. Other cheaper multimeters typically don't last that long
so you never get to find out if the LCD fades :->

I had a Keithley that gradually went totally dark in less than 5 years,
though. Nothing else failed, but it was unreadable after about 3 years.
Replaced it with another Fluke.
I do have a cheap Jaycar meter in the car which works OK after about 10
years or so. So price is not necessarily correlated.

There are third-party Display Fade Kits for Fluke multimeters. Gives
me an impression, from used/for sale Flukes, that fading is an
inevitable outcome. Any opinion of the the fading/durability of the
Fluke 87, 111, 110, 112, or 81438 models? Are any Fluke multimeters
immune (or less-apt) from display fade?

I'm asking this because Fluke multimeters cost $300-$400 for the new
models replacing the 80 series.

What I want is the Fluke's alert beeps when a new min/max is sensed.
Are there any other brands of multimeters that have this feature?

Why do Fluke multimeter LCD displays fade? Any Fluke model immune?

Yup, I have a ten year old 87 and it has no fading and it is treated
like crap.

My 87 good as new after >10years hard service.
I had to open it a few times to clean rubber contacts (very carefully) on
the buttons and LCD display as it went "fade", but after that its good as
new!

Sounds like a similar problem as some Nokia mobile phones then. Not
expensive to fix.

My old Fluke has a similar problem with a few segments. It has a cinductive
rubber bar b/n the board and the display. What have you successfully used
as a cleaning method?
