Question on home alarm - cut phone wire and break in

I have alarm + monitoring system installed in my house and I am worrying
about my phone line being cut. My house has a gray color box outside my
house. It's so obvious that everyone is smart enough to know that's a phone
box.

Take a look at this, mine looks exactly like this:
http://www.bell.ca/shop/application...hints_tips/wiring/facts.jsp&contentpage=facts

To prevent line being cut, the alarm guy told me I have 2 options:

1. Install a wireless module, if phone line get cut it. Alarm response will
be sent thro wireless. $400 install + $10 Wireless monthly fee

2. Remove the gray color box and drill a hole through the wall, 6 inches
below the ground. hide the phone line under the soil. Put that box inside
the house, so bad guys can't find the cable and don't know where to cut.
Will phone company be mad at me if I do this? anyone done this before?

Any comments or any other options?

We have seen in rare cases, burgs dig around the house looking for the phone
wires.
That's not a good enough solution for me.

We mostly use cellular backup in my area because there is long range radio
coverage out here.

There is a steel cover made for the purpose of offering security to
the gray box that you have. I do not know where you can locate one,
but you may want to contact Robert Bass (other post on this group) and
I feel sure that he can help you.

Burglars smart enough to dig down into the ground ? Are you serious ? Most
of the local burglars are too stupid to even figure out that cutting the
phone lines will disable the alarm. I can honestly say I have never heard of
any burglar that determined....

Here in Ottawa, phone line cut is not even an issue in residential
situations. In Toronto and Montreal it has become though to some degree !!
In Toronto recently, Alarmfarce..er...sorry...Alarmforce started advertising
their cellular backup program and in the process told the whole world about
the security risk of phone line cut !! (who's side are they on anyway ??) So
that probably ensured that every dull witted thief is now well versed in
what to do....

PS: Frank, I'll lend you a gun in case you can't keep up...:)))))...oops
sorry....that's illegal now.....:((((

Could you not just put a switch in the box and treat it like another
zone so when the cover is popped off it trips the alarm?

Most...

Yes. If you are interested, this particular case is a 100 year old house
that is like a museum inside.
They are in the middle of nowhere and got broken into about once a year on
average - sirens blaring, burglars didn't care.

The break-ins stopped when the homeowner was home sleeping (middle of the
day) and opened fire on a burglar in his living room. No one was hit (they
think), but the break-ins stopped. That was about 5 years ago now.

They have a big budget for security. :)

I bought a Motorola bag phone at a yard sale for $2, and a S1936D RJ11
adapter for it on eBay for another $20. The alarm panel plugged into
the cell phone and also provided a second phone line for the house.
Monthly cell fee was about $10, shared air time with my wife's portable
phone.

What about splitting the cable into 2 before entering the gray box, i.e.
one goes to the gray box and one goes to the hole 6 inches below the gnd.
Hide the splitting portion under the ground as well. In this case, your box
can stay outside and telco technicians won't be mad :)

phone cable --- |---> gray box (abv ground) ---> cable going back to the
house, regular phones
|---> cable hiding 6 inches below the gnd ---> go
into the house, connects to alarm

When burgular cuts your cable on your gray box (even cut all of them above
the ground), it only makes the regular phone lines dead, but 2nd line is
still functioning. Will that work? just my thoughts, never done it before..
LOL. Anyone?

Just an comment on the SA situation...

(almost) Everyone has a radio link as the pimary connection, with a
telephone link as a backup.

I get an alarm system installe, and then contact an armed response company
to link up. They come and install a radio transmitter (I pay the radio
license fee annualy) onto the PGM outputs, and there we go.

We have only one fixed line telephone operator. And I have rerouted their
wires totally. They never complain.

Cheers
Michael
