the amount of LEDS to be used is depended on power available from 120V AC and a diode you can drive at least 90 or more in series asuming a 2.5v each. then you can add more and more as you wish until the wires burn up.
LEDS unlike lamps the brightness sepends on current and a minimum of voltage present. i supose a triac and a photo triac interface can be used to vary the light output from the string of LEDS. i did something like this last xmas it is not as good as lamps though. good luck.
