(for phone recording, etc) for under $75? One that connects usb
to computer for upload of recording files?

Have a look at the Sony ICD-PX312. Has both a remote mike jack and a usb port
to dump to your computer. Runs around $50 at Amazon and NewEgg.

Cannot be used for phone recording, no external mic or remote.
It was a good suggestion, especially since older MP3 players are bound to
appear at garage sales.

Open the thing up (and if you have to break the case, all the better so
you'll put it in a different case where you can put switches and jacks)
and desolder the microphone and add a microphone jack. Then I guess you'd
want to bring wires from the pause button (maybe there's a more
appropriate button) so you can at least stop and start recording from a
remote location.

Keep in mind that they don't record in MP3, so the recording may use up a
fair amount of space, which may mean that 512K Sansa MP3 player that
someone is dying to get rid of will not be so useful for this purpose.

Find someone selling a minidisc recorder, since they had such a short
selling period they are mostly orphaned at this point and may get a low
price.

I bought something at a garage sale in the spring, and the seller went on
about his son buying the unit "$400, and now he doesn't even play the
guitar anymore", and then I asked about the minidisc disks, and he went
into another story about the son buying it just as MP3 players were
coming in, "another $400, and then he lost the thing...", all that
remained were the blank disks. I was tempted to buy them, "for when I
find the minidisc player", but didn't. Must be hard to be a frugal parent
of a teenager.
