Samsung SM-308 CD-RW/DVD combo drive for computer....SPINDLE MOTOR problem...

After poring through the Sci Elec Rep Faq, I think the problem with my
Samsung drive (internal, Dell 8100 desktop computer) is the spindle motor.
It needs a nudge to get the cd spinning, though the spindle platter seems to
spin freely by hand.**

Question: the brushless spindle motor is sealed on one end, and the cd
platter on the other end appears to be crimped on. Is there anything I can
do to this motor to get it going properly? I've removed it from the drive,
and blown air through it, and checked for bad connections on the miniboard
attached to its bottom. Motor is marked RSM-2616A .

I'd like to avoid leaving the drive open & having to poke the cd everytime I
need to use it! Thank you for your help,
Sean

**[It needs the smallest of nudges to get the cd spinning around. Once &
awhile, it will partially spin the cd not even a full revolution, but then
stops. This problem came about slowly....the drive wouldn't recognize cds
once & awhile, and then eventually, it wouldn't spin up for anything. I've
been through cleaning the lens & all the suggestions in the FAQ.]

Check the capacitor that supplies the spindle drive circuit with the kick
start to start up the motor. Use your ESR meter to check all the surface
mount and mini electroytics in the unit.

Beyond that, there is no repair for the motor other than replacement of the
entire unit. The precision is just to critical on the placement of the
spindle platter.

Mark,
I'm no expert...it appears to be brushless....has gray metal dome/half-round
shell that spins along with the platter above. There's some windings
underneath the metal shell that do not move.
It does seem like something along the rotation is missing, since a mere
nudge gets it spinning.

Are you certain this is really a brushless motor? Sounds an awful lot like a
regular permanent magnet / brush motor, shorted on 1/2 it's rotation
(typical problem).

David,
Thanks for the help. I'll examine those items next.
