I concede that cutting 17% of mail delivery days, will not save 17%
of Post Office expenses.

So, for you:
What percentage savings of total P.O. expenses is it worth to lose
Saturday delivery?

If they throw the junk mail away, they only need to deliver once a week :)

And package delivery... you aren't paying attention. FedEx does most
of the P.O. shipping... to and from P.O.'s. Your local P.O. only does
the "last mile".

You couldn't be more wrong.

FedEx delivers FedEx packages point to point.

FedEx moves exactly ZERO packages which get handled by the USPS, and
vice versa.

The P.O. could cease to exist and I wouldn't be bothered.

ALL of my bills are now by E-mail, and my magazines are downloads.

The P.O. only provides advertising junk.

I am paying attention, UPS is involved in USPS shipping also.
I'm for getting rid of the P.O., let those who desire to live in the
boonies pay the cost of their delivery. There are few things I pay by US
mail anymore and I could get around those if needed.

Hello Always-wrong. You are again wrong. What a perfect record.

By utilizing the U.S. Postal Service® (USPS) for final
delivery, FedEx SmartPost reaches every U.S. address,
including P.O. boxes and military APO, FPO and DPO destinations.

So, not needed in a metro area.

And the mail truck gets through the APO gate easier than the fedEx
truck, but you can bet there is still a truck full, and likely no savings
realized at all.

I am guessing that the "savings" is a LOT less that 17%..maybe (crude
guess) 5%.

Raise the rate enough that junk mail actually pays it's way. Then I
won't get 20 pieces of junk mail from Geico every month that has no way
to inform them that I don't deal with rubber lizards.
Speaking of rubber lizards, I don't have Geico either, I have
Progressive. They have the Passport that monitors your driving habits.
I used it on three cars and got a 30%, 13% and an 8% discount on our
rates. The 30% was an a car we rarely drive, 13% on our daily vehicle
and even my teen son got an 8% discount. Pretty good deal.
Nice to be able to look on the computer and see that my son only
occasionally exceeded 70 mph on his trips home from college.

you can only drive ONE car at a time, so why are paying three rates?
....after that comment, duck and cover!

The Post Office delivers packages to every address in the USA. They are
pre-funding pensions at billions a year because the Republicans are
trying to kill it. They'd break even otherwise.

ah, yes, pensions, the "employees take less pay today, for the promise
of continuing pay throughout their existance" and the "companies then
say, sorry, we made a bad deal, because we 'forgot' to set aside money
for the future, simply can't afford paying you now what was promised
30 years ago, so we're going to have the govt change the rules so we
don't have to pay" ploy.

Right. If they just promised pensions but didn't have to set any money aside to ever pay them, the P.O. could claim they were paying their own way.

I like the Post Office. The monopoly and Congress' running it (or anything) are what break it.

I didn't even mention the fourth vehicle!
No need to duck, I'm not throwing any thing.
They are mostly to show of my lavish* life style. :)
Oh, wait a minute, the newest one is 2001, maybe that isn't working.
I have a business van, that is driven for business.
I have pickup that we drive as our personal vehicle, my son has a car
at college, and the extra is well ahh, oh, if my wife and I need a car
at the same time. I only put about 1000 miles on it in the last 6
months. Two trips to see my son and daughter at college, well a combo,
kid visit and hamfest.

* About three years ago I had a second cousin visit, driving his new
Chevy. Probably a $30,000 car. We went to dinner and drove my 97 Lexus,
as he got in he said, "ooh! so this how the rich people live." I didn't
have the heart to tell him it was 13 years old, had 80,000 miles on it
and we only paid $4,000.

Oops. That link is to a service that charges $5 to do what can be
obtained for free. Here's the correct links:

Sorry(tm).

Actually, I use priority mail all the time over UPS. USPS is much faster.

The problem with the USPS is not efficiency, though I suppose they could
do better. Rather, it is a congressional requirement that they
contribute to their employee retirement plan

The problem is they are paying retirement benefits 75 years in advance
over the next ten years, essentially setting aside money for employees
not even hired yet. Blame the 2006 congress. Oh, and you know who was in
charge then.

The USPS also overpaid some retirement money, but congress won't return it.

The only thing worse than being a government organization is being a
quasi-government organization. You have to survive on your own, but
congress fucks you up.

You should have told him. He now believes you're an evil richie,
getting more than your fare[sic] share by operating a business, and
he'll vote for people to take it from you.

No!. Whatever you do you mustn't let any person, city, or state march
to a different beat. And make sure they buy Obamacare(tm)-brand death
panel insurance, or put 'im in prison, where he belongs.

I drive under 3,000 miles a year, and only have the one vehicle.

I drove a Ford Van for 27 years with a total of 180K miles. I gave it
to the Salvation Army when it finally died.
