Scavenging replacement MOSFET

I have a slayer exciter circuit I want to use to drive a plasma ball, but I foolishly overvolted the MOSFET (Model TIP41C) and now when I test it with a multimeter it is no longer able to change to off state.
I want to find a functional replacement by taking apart some junk electronics I have lying around (so far I've opened up an old home audio amp), but from what I've been able to gather transistor specs are far more complicated than I expected.

Are there some basic guidelines on what type/specs of MOSFET have the potential to work somewhat equivalently?

Background: I'm relatively inexperienced with electronics. I'm primarily a software developer but this is one of my weekend projects.

I appreciate any feedback!

The TIP41C is a bipolar NPN transistor.

You have a schematic we can look at ? To seek clues as to what is needed.
