How many volts do u think it would take to set a reed switch off at closest possible proximity with a coreless coil to generate the magnetic field? - and how many turns would the coil need to have?

Thanks for any ballpark figure.

I guess I better just make the darn thing and see if I can get it to twitch.

I bet its more loops the merrier in the coil.

Choose your reed switch from the list - check out the value shown as 'pull in sensitivity' (with a value stated as 'AT'). The AT refers to 'ampere-turns' i.e. the number of amps compared to the number of turns in your coil. The larger the number of turns the lower the amps, so wind it according to your desired current consumption and/or size of coil.

Too many variables to determine your application from information you have not supplied.
If it helps, I used a reed switch in a 1.2v glowplug circuit that drew approx. 2A when energised. The reed was activated by a series wind of 4 or 5 turns 24awg enamelled copper wire around the length of the reed glass housing.
BTW, this in turn operated a LED off the rx battery.
