After several attempts, I finally got through to someone at Sony.

I was told to reset the player, by pressing Stop and Power (on the unit)
simultaneously for 10 seconds. Lo and behold, the movie then played.

I was also told this would reset the player to factory defaults, but it
didn't. Everything was as I had left it.

So... Sometimes Dogbert /is/ correct...

Hint: It would have been nice if you had disclosed the maker and
model number of the problem Blue-Ray drive. An amazing number
of problems can be fixed by firmware updates.

Had you read the original post, you would have known that the player indeed
had the latest firmware.

If it's of any interest... IJ&tKotCS plays fine, but "Starship Troopers"
will not play. And it's a Sony (ie, Columbia) disk.

I shut the player off and unplugged it. Who knows...

Weird. So much for the region code theory. Which one? Starship
Troopers One, Two, or Three?

The first.

Is this your posting (under an alias)?

If not, you're not the only one with a problem "Starship Troopers"
Blu-Ray disk or player.

In all sincerity, thank you for doing for me what I should have done for
myself. It didn't occur to me to search for others with the same problem.

This is not my posting, but the description is identical. Guess I'm going to
have to call Sony again.

One responder said "Maybe your player has its s***ty movie filter
activated". "Starship Troopers" got really mixed reviews, with many
reviewers rather missing the film's anti-war, anti-fascist message -- which
were apparently not exactly what Robert Heinlein was thinking when he wrote
the novel (which I have not read).

Hmmm... I couldn't find any reference to that using Google. Must be
an inside secret. Don't tell anyone.

"STOP" and "POWER" together, or sometimes just holding "POWER" whilst
applying line power, is a typical reset sequence, used by many manufacturers
of many different types of equipment ...

LOL.

The SS style uniforms on the intelligence officers were a bit of a giveaway.
-- which
were apparently not exactly what Robert Heinlein was thinking when he wrote
the novel (which I have not read).

The book is nothing like the movie. Seeing the movie after reading the
book, it seems like the director had his tongue firmly in his cheek.

No question. You have to be rather dense not to get it.

You might enjoy reading some extracts from one of Heinleins books.
The extracts, which can be read at
http://www.angelfire.com/or/sociologyshop/lazlong.html
were published in a very pretty booklet entitled 'the notebooks of Lazarus
long'.

Here are a few to whet your appetite:

Always listen to experts. They’ll tell you what can’t be done and why. Then
do it!

There is no conclusive evidence of life after death. But there is no
evidence of any sort against it. Soon enough you will know. So why fret
about it?
