Trying to repair a non-responsive 12V DVD player from my car. Found a shorted area (looked like a burnt out piece of fluff) that appears to have damaged a resistor and so I suspect the closest semi as well. The semiconductor is in a SOT223 type package (though appears larger with the actual unit excluding the terminals measuring approx 4.4 x 2.4mm). The only markings are UL 25. Can anyone point me in the right direction please.

This sounds like the marking is a PCB reference designator and possibly an inductor.
Is UL25 on the component or PCB?.

Uh.. an Sot223 case is clearly an active component. its got three legs on one side and an earth/ground on the other. I clear;y stated the case is marked UL25...so no its not an inductor or a PCB marking.

SOT223 (4) can be voltage regulators too.
Stating that a burned component “resembled fluff” and “SOT223 package although appears larger”, does not fill me with confidence that you read the board or component properly. Hence upload a photo request.
