Clinical research studies carried out in Japan and Canada
scientifically proof that:

• Soladey-2 is more efficient in removing plaque than the conventional
toothbrush
• Soladey-2 significantly improves gingivitis and oral cleanliness
• The technical principle used by Soladey-2 has a bactericidal effect
against several species of microorganisms such as E. coli.

This toothbrush is a regular household item in Japan, where sales top
over 2 million units per year, and where the replacement brush heads
are purchased at a rate of over 5 million units annually for a total
of over 7 million units sold per year. Recently, it has been available
in Europe, the U.S.A, and Canada and is now imported to Australia by

I Start to wonder if we should rename the group
aus.electronics/dental.hygiene following several recent posts on
toothbrushes :)

might make things a little more exciting round here though ;)
Specially since the battery on my oral B has decided to go flat 2/3 of
the way through a brushing :)

I wonder if this is the same brand of toothbrush that those crazy goofy NZ
golfing guys used?

It might have proven to be slightly better than a "control" brush of
the same type, but it's still a manual toothbrush. Doesn't matter what
techno-bable it has, it ain't going to clean betetr than a good
electric toothbrush.
Maybe I might try to strap a maglight onto by electric toothbrush...

For AU$40 I can buy a CD burner which incorporates three technologies
- optics, mechanics, and electronics ... or I can treat myself to
"hi-tech" bristles on a stick.

<shrug>

BTW, the same brush (is it S o l a d a y or Soladey?) is available in
Canada for AU$14.

I think for the moment I'll stick to getting my TiO2 from generic
toothpaste. :)

Clinical research studies carried out in Japan and Canada
scientifically proof that:
• Soladey-2 is more efficient in removing plaque than the conventional
toothbrush

The Canadian study alluded to on your website compared the performance
of a Soladey toothbrush against a non-functional lookalike control
brush. Participants were discouraged from using toothpaste, although a
little was permitted. The results showed that Soladey users had
significantly better plaque reduction compared with the control
subjects. That's an impressive result, but how well does it translate
to real life? By that I mean, just how many real people brush their
teeth without toothpaste?

I'd like to see a study where control subjects using an ordinary
toothbrush and an appropriate toothpaste are compared against Soladey
trialists. AFAICS, if the Soladey's active component is TiO2, then any
toothpaste (eg Aldi's DentiTex) with this same ingredient may perform
just as well.
• Soladey-2 significantly improves gingivitis and oral cleanliness

This Japanese trial found no significant improvement in 4 out of 5
tests. The researchers did, however, notice an improvement in
gingivitis symptoms. This is not unexpected in light of bactericidal
studies of TiO2. One wonders whether a standard $2 toothbrush and TiO2
toothpaste would have achieved the same end. Regardless, I suspect a
mouthwash would be the best approach.
• The technical principle used by Soladey-2 has a bactericidal effect
against several species of microorganisms such as E. coli.

The study referred to on your webpage actually investigated the
bactericidal effect of titanium dioxide (TiO2) on streptococcus
mutans, a cariogenic bacterium, ie one that lives in the mouth and
causes dental caries. The effect on E. coli, a bacterium which lives
in the intestinal tract, was noted in a prior study in 1985. I would
suggest that highlighting the latter would be an inappropriate
marketing ploy, unless you expect people to brush where the sun don't
shine. In any case, as your product relies on solar energy for maximum
efficacy, brushing in the dark nether regions would probably be
ineffective ... unless the sun shines out of your backside. :)
Please visit: www.soladey.com.au/research.htm for scientific studies

The instructions for your product state that maximum efficacy is
achieved when the subject is facing bright sunlight with an open
mouth. This is due to a claimed photo-electro-chemical effect.

I'm left to ponder just how many of us have a bathroom with a sunny
aspect. And how many of us, for reasons of privacy, have frosted glass
or curtains covering our windows? What if we like to brush early in
the morning or late in the evening?
