Wire it across the power wires to the soldering iron.

But I'd recommend purchasing a temperature controlled iron - I got one from Banggood that has variable temperature (stabilised) but also switches itself to standby if it's left in its holder for more than 30 seconds and switches off completely if unused for more than 30 minutes (all times are programmable).

If you pick it up before the time-out period it automatically reheats - and only takes 10 seconds to do so......

The whole thing cost me around $25......

Thanks for your suggestion. I think that I'm going to go for your recommendation. I went to Banggood and entered temperature controlled soldering iron but failed to find something that matches your description. Can you possibly point me a little closer to what you describe?
