Soldering station smoking problem?

Hy guys i just bought today a new Velleman VTSS7 soldering station and when i turn it on it started smoking realy badly and smells like burned plastic where the heating element connects to the handel. Is that normal?

No.
The heating element is in the top of the device. The metal is usually perforated to allow heat to dissipate before it gets to the handle. I've seen models where this is not the case and the handle tends to get quite warm... but if it's melting or smoking, its a big problem!
Is it adjustable? You didn't accidentally buy a 110V iron and plug it into a 220V outlet?

Yes its ajustable, and its 230V on input as is my output voltage on mains

and DONT set the replacement to max !!
I won't, but it should work on high temps without smoking. My brother has the same price soldering station and it works on any temp without problem at all.

I have to ask. Are you sure there was not some packing material on the iron when you fired it up?

Yes im 100% sure there was none packing material on the iron, i even did a tear down of the handle and could'nt find anything
