Sony 200 disc dvd player won't read discs

I have Sony DVD Player, DVP-CX850D which has been working fine for several
year. All of a sudden, it won't read any discs. I took the cover off and
cleaned the thing that reads the discs (which really wasn't dirty) but that
didn't help.

Any ideas?

Thanks for the info. I kinda figured I wouldn't be able to do much more,
just kinda hoping someone had the same problem and was able fix it simply.

You need to run the diagnostic procedure for troubleshooting the DVD player
as outlined in Sony's training manual for DVD players.

There is some information at www.repairfaq.org for cd players, but anything
beyond a cleaning is more than anyone at home is likely to be equipped to
check.

The likelihood is that the laser pickup is bad - this is quite common on DVD
players. Since yours was a more expensive model, it may be worth fixing, but
be prepared to spend up to 200.00 or so on the repair.
