Sony SLV-SE20 VCR - PCB on video head repair query

hi

My neighbour's Sony SLV-SE20 VCR has developed a bad picture & sound
fault.

I've traced the problem to a circuit board which is mounted above the
rotating video head.

I've found that if I apply gentle pressure or tap one corner of the
board, the fault in picture and sound disappear.

In that corner of the board, there appears to be a surface mount chip
with a large piece of aluminium acting as a heatsink which has been
pop rivetted to the PCB. The heatsink gets very hot when the VCR is
operating normally.

The circuit board has the following markings on it:

DZH-928
LN9Z-16cB
SDV12D
EY92

I suspect a dry joint. Is this fault common with with this type of
VCR, and is it worth repairing?

I've already run my soldering iron carefully over the various SM
resistors and caps, but the chip and other SM components hidden
underneath the rivetted heatsink eludes me.

My neighbour has already bought a replacement VCR, but it would be
nice if his 4yr old VCR could be repaired cheaply.

Any advice appreciated.

I should point out I don't repair VCRs for a living and it was just
sheer luck I found the source of the fault as I originally thought it
was just dirty heads.

update:

I've since learnt that the PCB in question is the stator assembly.

Also, I removed the heatsink and carefully resoldered all the SM
components including the motor drive IC.

Unfortunately, no improvement. If anything, the problem is now
slightly worse so I'm on the right track.

I'm guessing the VCR is really beyond economical repair.

update 2:

just had another go at resoldering the motor drive IC this morning and
it seems to have fixed the problem.
