I have a 19" Sony Trinitron Monitor which since before its 3rd anniversary,
has been getting dimmer and dimmer. In order to use it, I've had to
maximize contrast and minimize brightness. The color rendition is fine, the
picture is sharp. Just dim. On a dark background, you can see retrace
lines. Boy, it's been decades since I've seen them.

Just wondering whether there are any user-serviceable parts that I can
replace. Thanks for you input.

User-serviceable ... sorry, no.

Low emission on the CRT would be my guess.

The CRT has been decreasing in emission, and the AKG circuits have
been trying to compensate to give proper bias. The range of the AKG is
probably at the end of its range. Sometimes, this can be temporarily
compensated for by adjusting the G2 (screen) bias adjustment. The
colour ballance will most likely shift with the bias change.

Look for 'color restoration' on the menu.

Probably is simply the "overbright" problem: I have just fixed two monitor
last days.
Very simple to repair, you need only the Sony software and a simple
RS232-TTL cable to connect the PC with the monitor.
Please inform us about the model, so we can help you.

This solution, I think, is for G1 chassis..
Probably pur friend don't have this chassis in his monitor.
I' ve used this solution (of changing R) and it work very great!
But finally I've choose to set G2 value using WinDAS software and a specific
cable to connect PC and monitor: this is the "better" solution, because you
can reset the eeprom of the monitor to the correct value of G2 parameter.
