Source for inexpensive speaker foam surrounds?

I need to refoam a couple of 8 inch woofers but they aren't really worth
much. What I've found at http://www.simply-speakers.com/ is order of $25.

Any suggestions or if you have a couple sitting around asking to be glued.

Sam, there is a company called MWA in AZ that sells them to dealers who
rebuild woofers, they may be able to refer you to one of them if they won't
set you up as a dealer.

I have used the flexible plastic foam that comes in thin sheets that
are sometimes used to protect electronics when they are shipped. It
seems to give quite satisfactory results. I glue it to the speaker
frame and to the speaker cone using regular ELmers wood glue.
Speakers have been in use for more than 5 years, and so far everything
is fine. The hard part is to find the plastic foam wrappers.

I have never used them but have been thinking about ordering some, just
trying to think what else I need to make up a $25 minimum order but Mat
Electronics ( http://www.matelectronics.com/ ) has them el-cheapo. The 10
inch ones are less than $2 ea. RM ~


PS, Should you order from them before I do, let me know how it goes. I'll
post my experience here if I get my act together and make an order.

I've ordered from them several times. You should check to make sure
they are in stock. More than once I've added a bunch of things to
meet the minimum order only to receive everything but the surrounds I
placed the whole order for. On my last order, they sent be the wrong
size and I'm still waiting for the replacements they promised me
(they're out of stock). The good news is that they are cheap and work
fine if you can get them.

Wonder if maybe ordering by telly would give you a better idea if they have
them in stock or not?

What kind of adhesive did you use? I have never re-foamed anything before
but would think something that was fairly fast on setting would be better so
that the clearance on the coil wouldn't slip during the drying process.

I would either check by phone, or email before you order.

I like to glue the surround to the cone using contact cement. This
works well since it's difficult to clamp the surround to the cone. I
use white glue (fabric glue) to glue the surround to the basket
because it dries slowly enough to allow time to position it correctly.
I usually use weights to clamp it to the basket.

If it has a front 'gasket' you can just stand it face down on a flat
surface.

Or clamp that with the clothspins.

No gasket but was thinking (my biggest problem, I think too much) I might
modify the clothespins or add a shim about the thickness of a gasket so they
mate with top of basket better. RM~

I'm looking for some cheap foam to insulate my house. It should also be
fireproof.
