Have you ever connected one speaker the right way and one backwards to an
amplifier and put them close together? The sound somewhat "cancels out"!

You have just discovered the basics of an electronic noise canceling
circuit! The speaker regenerates the unwanted noise at 180 deg phase shift!

It's not at a 180 degree phase shift, it's merely the inverse. If you
don't believe me, run sin(x) + (0.5 * sin(2*x)) through an inverting
amplifier. Show me the phase-shifted wave in the output.
